  15. This CD contains 250 photographic images supplied in two formats. They are
  16. intended to help users access quality images for a variety for uses, without
  17. the need to source material and then scan it.

  19. To give you a quick idea what is on the disc load the 'overview' sprite. You
  20. can do this by either double clicking on it or dragging it onto the !Paint
  21. application (if loaded).

  25. The images are stored as sprites inside the _SPRITES directory.
  26.  
  27. Inside this directory you'll find four subdirectories (country, landscape,
  28. life and plants). Each of these subdirectories contains a draw format index
  29. file, this gives you an at-a-glance thumbnail view of all the images in that
  30. section. The images are stored in further subdirectories accessed from these
  31. subdirectories.

  33. The sprites are 800X600 16 million colours format.

  37. The images are stored as compressed JPEGs inside the _JPEG directory.
  38.  
  39. The JPEG images are stored in the same structure as the sprite files, at the
  40. same pixel resolution but quality compressed at factor 85. You should only
  41. use these JPEG versions with CAUTION.

  43. We supplied a JPEG mirror of the sprite files for two main reasons. First
  44. they are smaller in terms of file size and this makes them easier to handle,
  45. and store off the CD. Also we know some users may need to use these images
  46. on other computer platforms such as PC or Mac, JPEG images are readily
  47. accepted by software on these computers.

  49. You should NEVER use the JPEG images if you intent to commercially publish
  50. the images or if you intent to recompress using the JPEG format after
  51. altering the images. JPEGs appear to look as good as sprites on screen
  52. however the quality in dramatically reduced in order to reduce the file size
  53. and this is extremely noticeable with full colour commercial printing.
  54. Repeated recompession of a JPEG image in the JPEG format will increase
  55. interference and remove definition.
